Westbrook ME Real Estate, Westbrook Area and Community Information
Westbrook Properties in Maine are part of an area dating back to the first settlers in this country. It began as Saccarappa, a region off of the Presumpscot Rivers. It was part of what we now know as Portland until 1814. At that time it was incorporated as Stroudwater. Later named Westbrook after the Colonel Thomas Westbrook, it was divided into two municipalities in 1871. Today they are Westbrook and Deering. Westbrook was incorporated as a city by 1891.
The water supplied by Congin Falls and Saccarappa Falls allowed early mills to start up within Westbrook ME Real Estate sites. This brought prosperity to the region. As time went on lumber, cotton textiles, and paper were all being manufactured here, among other goods. The population grew, and the development of the Cumberland and Oxford Canal increased traffic to the city. Once obsolete as a form of transportation, it was replaced with a railroad and today’s turnpike system. Remains of the original canal can still be found throughout Westbrook Real Estate.
