A community that has ample natural beauty and many recreational opportunities to offer, Gorham, Maine is attractive to many potential home buyers. The first step to finding a new home is to enlist the help of a Gorham realtor who is familiar with the area, its current market conditions, and even its rich history.
Early History
The Town of Gorham was initially known as Narragansett Number 7 because it was one of the seven the Massachusetts General Court conveyed to soldiers and, in some cases, the surviving heirs of soldiers who participated in the Narragansett War of 1675, which is also known as King Philip's War. With the first settlement arriving in 1736, the first saw mill had been established by John Gorham and was up and running by 1743. The mill was burned during the area's first Indian raid in 1745. More Indian raids took place in 1746, followed by the Treaty of Paris that was eventually signed in 1763 to end the French and Indian Wars. In 1764, the town was incorporated as Gorham. The modern town full has come quite far from its humble beginnings as an embattled settlement to the peaceful setting that surrounds Gorham homes today.
